Before the existence of the internet, fashion brands relied on a “finger in the air” approach to marketing and decision-making. One of the most powerful things about the web is that it has led to an explosion of data, allowing brands to deeply understand their consumer and make smarter decisions to drive growth. A traditional “bricks and mortar” retailer would have had little or no understanding about what drove footfall, what visitors did once in store and about the behaviours that led to purchase – it was difficult to systematically obtain data that was anything other than anecdotal and impossible to aggregate in order to understand collective behaviour.
